Getting Started

Screening questions help you filter candidates during the application process. You can add up to 5 questions that candidates must answer when applying for your vacancy.

Not all question types are supported by all job boards. The system displays icons next to each question type showing which job boards support that type.

Accessing Screening Questions

When creating or editing a vacancy:

  1. Navigate to the Additional Information step

  2. Look for Screening Questions section

  3. Click Add Question to add a new question

  4. You can add up to 5 questions

Question Types

The system supports two question types, each with different publisher support:

Text Area (Free Text)

Description: Candidates write a free-form answer.

Features:

  • Open-ended questions

  • Detailed responses

  • Requires manual review

  • Good for explanations and feedback

Example: "Tell us why you're interested in this role."

Note: Not all job boards accept text area responses. Check the publisher icons before adding this question type.

Select Field (Dropdown)

Description: Candidates choose one option from a dropdown list.

Features:

  • Multiple predefined options

  • Clean interface

  • Easy to filter and organise responses

  • Can mark preferred/desired answers

  • Supported by more job boards than Text Area

Example: "What is your experience level?"

  • Entry Level

  • Mid-Level

  • Senior

  • Executive

Creating Screening Questions

Step 1: Add a Question

  1. Click Add Question button

  2. A new question form appears

  3. Review the publisher icons (showing which boards support each type)

  4. Enter your question text

  5. Select question type

Step 2: Configure Question Type

  1. Choose either Text Area or Select Field

  2. Check the publisher icons to ensure your chosen type is supported by your destination boards

  3. If an icon is not shown, that board doesn't support that question type

Step 3: Add Options (Select Field Only)

For Select Field questions:

  1. Enter option text (one option per line)

  2. Use the checkboxes to mark preferred or desired answers

  3. Desired answers help filter candidates automatically

  4. Add all desired options

  5. Remove options if needed

For Text Area questions, skip this step.

Step 4: Set Killer Question (Optional)

Mark a question as a Killer Question:

  1. Check the Killer Question checkbox

  2. This means wrong answers will auto-reject the candidate

  3. Use only for essential requirements

Step 5: Save Question

  1. Review your question

  2. Check options are correct (for Select Field)

  3. Verify the question type matches your job boards

  4. The question is auto-saved

Best Practices

Question Design

Keep It Simple:

  • Clear and concise language

  • Easy to understand

  • Relevant to the role

  • Avoid ambiguity

Be Specific:

  • Ask about specific requirements

  • Focus on essential criteria

  • Avoid vague questions

  • Make it job-relevant

Question Types and Publishers

Check Publisher Support:

  • Review the icons showing which publishers support each question type

  • Text Area is supported by fewer publishers

  • Select Field is more widely supported

  • If your chosen type isn't supported, candidates on that board won't see it

Use the Right Type:

  • Text Area - When you need detailed written responses (but expect manual review)

  • Select Field - For predefined options that job boards can handle

Number of Questions

Limit Questions:

  • Maximum 5 questions

  • Focus on essentials

  • Don't overwhelm candidates

  • Balance thoroughness with simplicity

Killer Questions

What Are Killer Questions?

Killer questions automatically filter candidates:

  • Wrong answer = immediate rejection

  • Saves time on unsuitable candidates

  • Must be used carefully

  • Clear right/wrong answers only

When to Use

Use killer questions for:

  • Essential requirements (e.g., "Do you have right to work in the UK?")

  • Legal/compliance needs

  • Non-negotiable criteria

  • Clear yes/no requirements

Important Note

Not all job boards support killer question functionality. Some boards may accept the question but not enforce the automatic rejection. Use killer questions primarily for the careers page and boards that explicitly support them.

Example: "Do you have the right to work in the UK?"

  • Yes (mark as desired)

  • No (will auto-reject)

Troubleshooting

I can't see an icon for my job board:

  • That board doesn't support the question type you selected

  • Choose a different question type that is supported

  • The question won't appear to candidates on that board

  • Consider using Select Field instead (more widely supported)

I can't add more than 5 questions:

  • Maximum is 5 questions per vacancy

  • Prioritise your most important questions

  • Combine related questions if possible

Questions aren't showing to candidates:

  • Verify the question type is supported by that job board (check icons)

  • Check the question is marked as active

  • Verify the vacancy is published

  • Ensure questions are saved

  • Test the application process

Answers aren't being captured:

  • Verify the job board supports that question type (check icons)

  • Check the application form is working

  • Test the application process

  • Contact support if issues persist

A killer question didn't auto-reject the candidate:

  • Not all job boards support automatic killer question rejection

  • The feature may only work for the careers page and certain boards

  • Check answers manually as a backup

  • Consider this a feature hint rather than a guarantee

I need to change a question after publishing:

  • Edit the vacancy

  • Modify the question

  • Changes apply to new applications

  • Existing applications keep old answers
